With Loretta Young being my star of the month, I thought it was the perfect time to read her authorized biography, Forever Young, the Life, Loves, and Enduring Faith of a Hollywood Legend. I am halfway finished with it, and all I can say is that it is a fascinating, delightful, and very interesting read. Miss Young was a devout Catholic, and her commitment to God and His ways was the ruling factor in her life. No, Loretta wasn't perfect, nor was her life without its share of mistakes, but the longing to live a life pleasing to God was at the very core of her being, and never was that more apparent than in her relationship with Spencer Tracy.
Until my reading of this book, I never knew that Miss Young and Mr. Tracy were ever "an item." All I've heard for years is that Katharine Hepburn was the love of Spencer Tracy's life. However, Forever Young reveals that Spencer also had another great love in his life---and that love was Loretta Young.
In 1933, Loretta and Spencer were paired together in Man's Castle, and during production of the film, they soon became involved with one another. According to Miss Young's biography, "Tracy had a way of focusing all his attention on Loretta, and seemed to find absolute joy in her presence. For Loretta, it was a time of romance unlike anything she had ever experienced."
Though they were in love with one another, it was, apparently, a chaste relationship...."Couples in love, practicing restraint, and not "going all the way" was fairly conventional behavior, fitting the mores of that time." Even without anything physical between them, though, Loretta became ashamed of dating another woman's husband. She knew there could never be anything permanent between them, as Spencer was married and was not allowed by the Church to divorce his wife and re-marry Loretta within it. For Loretta's part, having married once outside the Church (to Grant Withers in 1930) and feeling estranged from God as a result, another marriage outside the church was out of the question. The two of them went to Confession each week (Spencer was also a Catholic), but instead of the absolution she longed for, Loretta was told by her priest that she must break off the relationship, for unless the confessor was willing to end his or her sinful behavior, they would not experience God's forgiveness. Loretta knew she faced the big question: Did she love Spencer more? Or did she love God more?
In the end, though she "loved everything about him," Loretta chose to break things off with Spencer, something she did through a letter. Her commitment to God and His ways had trumped her love for Spencer.
Many years later, Loretta would have tea with Spencer's daughter, Susan, and be presented with the break-up letter she had given to Spencer all those years before. Though Loretta had signed the letter simply "Me," Susan knew who its author was, for, as she told Loretta during their time together, " ...there were only two women in my father's life...my mother and you." While Katharine Hepburn may have been a great love in Spencer Tracy's life, so, too, was Loretta Young. That surely was news to me!

Hi Patti, so nice to hear from you and thank you for stopping by. I remember that Loretta Young was married to Ricardo Montalban, so when did they marry and was it a catholic wedding? I didn't know about her and Spencer Tracy, she was always one of my favorites, thought she was so beautiful and also her sister. First thing I saw here on your blog was my William Holden, so yummy. Hugs...Lu
ReplyDeleteLu, Loretta was never married to Ricardo Montalban; however, her younger sister Georgiana (Georgie) was. They were married for over 60 years.
DeleteLoretta was married 3 times---a short marriage to Grant Withers in 1930, then Tom Lewis for over 25 years, and finally, in the 90's to costume designer Jean Louis.
Oh my oh my...I had absolutely no idea about Loretta Young and Spencer Tracy! They seem like an odd match to me and I'm a bit disappointed in Spencer:( I always thought he was basically faithful until Katharine came along and she was his soul mate, therefore he went outside his marriage but only for her. I also have an issue when people have affairs and think just because they haven't gone all the way it's not really an affair...I probably shouldn't read this book lol. Interesting stuff to know though and I still love Loretta:)
ReplyDeleteMaybe a bit of an odd pairing...and also, he was 13 years older than she.
DeleteLoretta did believe that even if it wasn't physical it was still an affair, because she was feeling "ashamed of her role as the other woman." During the time she and Spencer were dating, they "struggled to stay chaste and dealt with their burdened consciences..."
Loretta had a strict moral code which she lived by, and she knew carrying on with a married man didn't fit into that code. (Her "iron will" would slip again and result in 1 night with Clark Gable, and again she would be ashamed for not living up to her principles.)

Thank you, Barbara, for the invitation to visit your site. It is always great to discover resources for obtaining those hard-to-find, TCM-isn't-airing movies.
DeleteI have read Loretta's book as well and it is not exactly juicy but it's interesting to read from her own voice. A lot of people are skeptical of Loretta's claim that she never slept with Spencer. People in Clark Gable's circle were quick to tell him when she was pregnant that the baby could very well be Spencer's. It seems strange to me though that she would admit to sleeping with Clark and not Spencer...although with Clark there was physical evidence!
ReplyDeleteNice to come across your site; I am a fellow member of the CMBA and it has taken me far too long to pay you a visit!
Thank you for visiting, Mr. Gable. I am excited about being a member of the CMBA, and I look forward to meeting many new classic movie fans such as yourself.
DeleteI suppose people are skeptical about Loretta's claim simply because it is so unexpected and counter-culture. Maybe part of the appeal Loretta held for Spencer was, in fact, her virtue. But, only the 2 of them will ever really know.
A very interesting read about Loretta. Love her films, but.. not so crazy about her private life..
ReplyDeleteDawn, I responded to your comment and then remembered that you are reading a different bio of Loretta, so I decided to change my comment.
DeleteI don't find Loretta's private life to be all that bad. Certainly, it wasn't as sordid as that of the majority of stars. No, she wasn't perfect, but her heart was to do right and to be a good role model. Maybe the bio you are reading is painting a completely different picture.
Patti, I really only care about her acting and she is one of my favorite actress. :)
ReplyDeletePatti, this is truly news to me. I didn't know Loretta and Spencer had an affair. I always thought that Katherine Hepburn was the love of his life, she certainly was loyal to him until the end.
ReplyDeleteWhatever the actors and actresses did in their real life, it was their business, but I can't help to be often surprised at some pairings. This one is a total surprise.
I am right there with you, Axela, on being surprised by this pairing. It would be interesting to know if Spencer's biography makes mention of Loretta and, if so, how deep the feelings were. After all, there are 2 sides to every story, and I have only read Loretta's side.
DeleteIn the end, though, as you said, what they did in their personal lives was their business, and it ought not change our feelings about them. (I still love all my guys, even knowing about their failings!)
I am enjoying all the posts on Loretta Young. She was a wonderful talent !!! I read a quote years ago ( I think from Shelly Winters,) that every time Loretta had a love affair, whether physical or not, she would donate to the Catholic Church and with her help, several large churches were built in Hollywood/Beverly Hills area !
ReplyDeleteKris, I don't know anything about that, but during filming of "Come to the Stable," Loretta set up a "swear box," charging 25 cents each time a crew member spoke the Lord's name in vain. She had grown weary of the profanity on the set and sought to eradicate it. The fine money was donated to a Catholic maternity home.
